  Our May 8th program will include a tour of the Texas State Cemetery and Visitors Center located at 909 Navasota Street. Street parking is available for vehicles on Navasota Street between 7th and 11th Streets; be aware of residential parking signs and parking meters. Accessible parking for those with disabilities is available on the drive in front of the Visitors Center. Please check in at the Visitors Center office upon arrival, then proceed to the Conference Room where lunch will be waiting. Note that restroom facilities are limited and comfortable shoes are recommended due to the uneven terrain of the grounds.

  Lunch : 12:00-1:00, includes self-guided tour of Visitors Center.

  Guided group tours will focus on the lives and legacies of individuals buried at the Cemetery who made significant contributions to Texas history and culture

  About the Cemetery:

  In 2015 the Texas State Preservation Board assumed control of day-to-day operations at the Texas State Cemetery. In addition to caring for the Cemetery, the agency is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the Texas Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Bullock Texas State History Museum, along with various state office buildings in the Capitol Complex.

  In 2018, the State Preservation Board developed a master plan to help steer the Cemetery into the future by identifying potential improvements in all aspects of Cemetery operations. One of the primary initiatives in the master plan is more efficient use of the existing space within Cemetery grounds. By resurveying certain Cemetery sections more gravesites may be added, thus allowing the Cemetery to continue operations well into the 21st Century and beyond.

  In 2023, the Texas State Cemetery welcomed more than 43,500 visitors to this unique and historic site. Many of those who visited were schoolchildren who received official tours guided by the State Preservation Board’s Visitors Services division. Today the Cemetery is a place that reflects the past, present and future of Texas.

  About our Speaker:

  Dawn Lewis is dedicated to expanding access to clean drinking water. Over the past six years, she made an impact in Laos, SE Asia, where she led the TerraCare program through TerraClear, providing 10,000 subsidized ceramic filters to vulnerable families in southern Laos, bringing clean drinking water to over 50,000 people. Her commitment extends globally, as she has also contributed to clean water projects in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

  Currently, Dawn serves as the Executive Director of the TerraClear Foundation, where she secures funding and forges connections that support Lao families to access clean drinking water. Dawn also spent a decade as a teacher in Texas and authored the children’s book “My Teacher Moved to Laos,” which details life in Laos.

  A Missouri native, Dawn holds a BS Civil Engineering and an MA Linguistics and speaks French and Lao. She enjoys time in nature, and moments with her family, many of whom reside in Austin, Texas, where Dawn now calls home.
