New Austin Central Library and Tour

Speaker:  John Gillum,, Director of Austin Library Planning

Introduced by Lion John Nyfeler

Lions will tour the new Austin Central Library, 701 Cesar Chavez Street. Members may park at one of three garages, 1) the library parking garage, entrance on West Avenue. (the garage has a sign indicating the number of available spaces at that time), or if it’s full, 2) 131 Nueces Street Garage, or 3) Seaholm Parking Garage, 211 Walter Seaholm Drive (Trader Joes). The two remote garages are within a block of the library.

After parking, appear at Flower Child Restaurant at the NE corner of Nueces and 2nd Street (500 West 2nd Street) at 11:30 AM.  Your box lunch will be waiting for you.  Make your lunch choice in your registration.

Have your lunch then walk to the library across the yellow arch bridge spanning Shoal Creek. We will meet on the ground floor at the gift shop/information desk at 12:15 PM for the tour.

John Gillum, Director of Austin Library Planning will meet with us and make remarks about the planning of the new facility. Tour guides will take two groups on the tour. We will plan for one group to end at 1:00 sharp and one will end at 1:15.

About our speaker:
Mr. John Gillum has thirty-eight years of experience in the planning, design, construction and management of public libraries primarily in the employment of the perennially fast growing City of Austin. His experience in a longtime, dual role of planner and facility manager for this major, urban library system has uniquely enabled him to plan and manage library buildings which are first and foremost aesthetically engaging, but also enduringly functional and sustainable.

His passion is always to create libraries beloved by their community for their architectural beauty, by librarians for how well their layouts serve them in providing the best library services, and by the stewards of their structures for how soundly the buildings withstand the test of time. His work on programming and development of library buildings includes eighteen branch library projects for the City of Austin, as well as several others in the Central Texas region as an independent library consultant. Mr. Gillum served as the day to day client representative for the New Central Library Project of the City of Austin. His responsibilities to this project included site and design team selection and authoring the textual blueprint for a facility now standing as an award winning main library and architectural landmark.
