LION TO LION

Retired NFL player William Graham

Hosts Annual Sportsmanship Awards

May 12, 2016

Introduced by Lion Greg Harkrider

At this Thursday’s gathering, meet Austin NFL Alumni member William Graham, who will be keynote speaker during our Annual Sportsmanship Awards. The 5-time defensive player at the University of Texas and 6-season starter for the Detroit Lions will roar with us on May 12, when student athletes from two AISD athletic teams receive recognition from our Club.

Graham is one of the Austin NFL Alumni the Founder Lions have previously partnered with at our very successful Sporting Clay Shoot Out. We are excited about partnering with them again at our upcoming 6th Annual Shoot Out on June 17th at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet.

Graham attended UT from 1978-81, during which time he was a two-year starter, three-year letterman and an All-Southwest Conference Defensive Back in 1981. He was voted Outstanding Defensive Player of the 1982 Cotton Bowl. He also organized and directed the team Bible study in 1980 and ’81.

Drafted by the Detroit Lions in ’82, Graham became a starter in his rookie season. He led the team in tackles in ’84 and ‘85 and was voted Player of the Game 9 times between 1982 and 1987. He retired in 1988 to enjoy life with his wife of 26 years, Lisa, and their sons, Hayden and Gavin, both Anderson High School graduates (2012 and 2015).

Hayden, by the way, won a Founder Lions’ Sportsmanship Award in 2012 when he was a senior at Anderson. He received a scholarship to the United States Air Force Academy, where he is now a senior, having a very successful year. In 2015-16, he was team captain, the most valuable player, the team’s leader scorer, the team assist leader, the team’s leading rebounder, and voted All-Conference Mountain West Honorable Mention. (Looks like we know how to pick ‘em.)

Younger brother Gavin is now following in his brother’s footsteps as a freshman at USAF Academy on scholarship.

William Graham is on the Board of Directors Austin’s NFL Alumni Chapter and secretary of the chapter. The chapter’s mission is “Caring for Kids,” which it carries out by supporting local charities.

Come join us for a celebration and recognition of youth athletics at our annual Sportsmanship Award presentation. The stars of the day will be the young athletes whose schools receive awards for their excellence.
