Sierra Castedo
introduced by Lion Robert Seidel

Addiction robs many young people of their potential, their families, and sometimes their lives. For the ones who find recovery, college campuses can seem like a threat to their sobriety. Learn about what college campuses are doing to ensure that no one has to choose between their recovery and their higher education.

Sierra Castedo has been part of the collegiate recovery field since 2012, first as a student helped by a collegiate recovery program, and now as the director of a program at one of the largest universities in the country. Sierra has been involved at the national level as a board member of the Association of Recovery in Higher Education, serving as the Southwest Region Representative since May of 2016. Acting as a guide to newly-established programs in the University of Texas System’s efforts to expand collegiate recovery programs to each of its academic institutions, Sierra has had experience working with a diverse set of campuses across the state of Texas. At the local level, Sierra has been involved in multiple collaborations, including the formation of the Recovery-Oriented Community Collaborative and the Youth Recovery Network. These collaborations frequently involve extensive work with recovery high schools, focusing on the transition from high school to college as a young person in recovery. Her previous involvement includes the Austin chapter of Young People in Recovery (co-chair), UT Austin’s Students for Recovery student organization (president), and SAMHSA’s Project LIFT Behavioral Health Leadership Development Program. Sierra is a certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist, and is working toward a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus. She is the co-author of the book chapter “Collegiate Recovery” to be published in Emerging Adults in Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Developmental Considerations and Innovative Treatments (ed. Douglas Smith) later this year.
