ACLU

The ACLU of Texas is proud to be the 11th largest ACLU affiliate in the United States, with more than 14,000 card-carrying members across our state. Sustained by a dedicated board of directors, a small staff and dozens of dedicated volunteers, the ACLU of Texas and its predecessor, the Texas Civil Liberties Union, have been at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights in Texas since 1938.

Lisa GraybillSpeaker's Bio:  Lisa Graybill joined the ACLU of Texas in 2005 as its first Legal Director in ten years. A native Texan, Lisa grew up in San Antonio. She received her BA with a Double Major in Government and Women’s Studies from Smith College, graduating with highest honors in 1991. She received her JD with Honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1999. After graduation, Lisa clerked for a federal district judge in New Jersey, then joined the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. While at the Justice Department, Lisa worked on police misconduct investigations, jail and prison conditions cases, and Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (“FACE”) cases.
Under Lisa’s leadership, the ACLU of Texas fights in federal and state courts to protect Texans’ civil rights under the U.S. Constitution, federal and state law. Her recent legal victories include helping to end the detention of immigrant children at the T. Don Hutto Family Detention Center and the teaching of an unconstitutional Bible curriculum in Odessa; and protecting public community college students’ rights to free speech and school children’s rights to practice their faiths free of government intrusion.
