Jay Banner, Ph.D. Jackson School of Geosciences and Environmental Science Institute, The University of Texas at Austin
Introduced by Lion Ann Ward
Climatological and geopolitical forces converge in Texas and have the potential to put extreme stress on water resources. Naturally preserved records from over the last thousand years portray significant periods of drought, of much longer duration than the 1950s “drought of record” that is commonly used in planning. Climate models for the 21st century project that Texas will become significantly warmer and drier, leading to unprecedented drought risks. With concurrent rapid growth of the state’s population, science, engineering, policy, communications, public health and economics are essential elements needed for the state’s planning for the projected changes.
About our Speaker
Jay Banner grew up in New York City and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied geology and chemistry. He pursued graduate studies at Stony Brook University and then was a post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and Louisiana State University. He is presently the F. M. Bullard Professor in the Jackson School of Geosciences and Director of the Environmental Science Institute at UT-Austin.
Banner investigates the impacts of urbanization on water resources, and the reconstruction of past climate change, soil erosion and ocean chemistry. His field research sites include Texas, Guam, the midcontinent USA, Barbados and the Bahamas. Banner teaches courses in geoscience, sustainability, and his newest course is on environmental justice. He is a member of UT-Austin’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He enjoys his family, his dogs and ultimate frisbee.
