Random Musings from Austin’s Premier Armchair Philosopher

DATE: January 7, 2021  12:30 pm via Zoom

 Ken Herman
Introduced by Lion John Nyfeler

The year 2021 will receive a great Lions’ kick-off with the ever-humorous and thoughtful columnist Ken Herman as our first speaker. Many of us read his columns regularly in the Austin American-Statesman, but we assure you he’s even funnier and sharper in person than on the page.

An early contractor of the coronavirus, Ken let local readers know first-hand of his quarantine (even from his wife) in a small bedroom in his northwest Austin home. His take on any topic is guaranteed to employ a wry tone and elicit a chuckle.

About our Speaker:

Ken began his journalism career in 1975 at The Lufkin Daily News in East Texas. Two years later, he joined The Associated Press in Dallas, and later worked for AP in Harlingen and Austin.

He was part of the AP's Capitol staff in Austin from 1979 to 1988, when he became Austin Bureau Chief for The Houston Post. When the Post folded in 1995 (not his fault), Herman joined The American-Statesman as Capitol Bureau Chief.

In 2001, after covering George W. Bush's presidential campaign, Herman went to Washington for a six-month stint as Cox Newspapers White House correspondent. He returned to Austin in June 2001 to resume covering state government and politics.

In June 2004, he returned to Washington to cover the Bush re-election campaign. From January 2005 through February 2009 he was Cox Newspapers White House correspondent.

He’s now a popular and award-winning columnist for The American-Statesman.
