Texas Lions Camp First Step for Archery Champion
In the summer of 2016, Alden Sherwood attended Texas Lions Camp. The sophomore student at Cedar Ridge High School has battled cancer since 2012, and brain surgery left him struggling with Posterior Fossa Syndrome as well. PFS caused severe ataxia, hemiplegia (right sided weakness), tremors, reduced fine motor skills, double vision, sensory disturbance, memory issues, processing delay, severe balance issues and emotional distress. A once right-handed Alden had to learn to use his left hand to minimally function in everyday tasks. It took 2 ½ months before Alden could come home from the hospital safely, and 18 months before he could return to school part-time.
Attending Texas Lions Camp last summer helped Alden see that his wheelchair doesn’t limit him as much as he previously believed. His Mom, Trisha, says that after two years of feeling lonely and struggling with depression and low self-esteem due to his physical deficits, Texas Lions Camp helped him see he was capable of so much more. The camp put a bow in his hands, taught him the basics of how to shoot it, and just like that his love of archery began.
Come meet Alden and Trisha, and hear about his incredible progress toward becoming a Paralympic archer. Competing after only four months of lessons, Alden now is ranked in the top 15 in the state and is competing in the state championship Feb. 23-24 in Roanoke, TX.
Alden will make you proud to be a Lion and proud to support Texas Lions Camp. Lion Ann Ward, Texas Lions Camp Board Elected Director for District 2-S3, will share some information about the camp, and the club’s April 1 workday will be explained.
