Heroes To Villains: A History of Anti-Texas Prejudice

DATE: Thursday February 24, 2022  12:30 pm via Zoom

 Bartee Haile
Introduced by Lion JP Kirksey

Mr. Bartee Haile will share with us some of the results of his intensive research into the history of Anti-Texas prejudice. He will share a personal encounter with anti-Texas bias. In addition he will tell of the little known events and facts of the Spring of 1836, how an ex-president turned the tide of public opinion against Texas, and the myth of Andrew Jackson’s support.

Ever wonder why the Republic of Texas was not annexed to the US until 1845? Mr. Haile will enlighten us on those issues as well as the little known Massachusetts insult. along with some uncommon tales of Texas-bashing by Texans and the aftermath of the JFK assassination. Maybe some analysis of anti-Texas feelings that persist to this day.

Mr. Haile will also brief us on the content and availability of his books about Texas history and culture.

About our Speaker:

Bartee Haile was born in Dallas a month to the day after the bomb was dropped on Japan ending the Second World War. He grew up in a family of corporate gypsies moving at least once and sometimes twice a year. Because of that, he attended 13 schools in 12 years!

After graduation from Richardson High School in far north Dallas, he spent a semester at Texas Tech before the dust storms drove him back to Big D. He finished his college education at SMU -- Southern Methodist University.

He went to Houston for a weekend in 1969, met his future wife Gerri and never left. Fifty-three years later, they are still married and live in The Woodlands in a home directly behind their son and granddaughter.

After a far from satisfying career in middle management (three consecutive employers went bankrupt) his wife suggested that he should try writing. which he had talked about doing for years. He launched "This Week In Texas History" as a weekly feature for small-town and suburban newspapers in 1983. After 39 years and more than 2,000 columns, he is pleased to say that it is the longest running statewide column of its kind ever.

Also, at the invitation of The History Press, he began writing books -- on Texas History of course -- in 2017. At the present he has five in print and available for purchase, which he will briefly describe at the end of his talk.
