Non-Moving Violations

Ben Wear

February 18, 2016

Introduced by Lion Anne Rodgers

Austin’s gridlock traffic sometimes makes us wonder if it’s even possible these days to be issued a moving violation within the city limits. But of course, we all know — where traffic is concerned — the bad news never seems to end.

The Austin American-Statesman’s transportation reporter Ben Wear has been cheerfully reporting on this extremely rugged beat since 2003, but still looks remarkably youthful. On Feb. 18, you can ask him what elixir he drinks to make that possible when he addresses the club about our city’s myriad traffic snarls.

His talk will cover the MoPac toll expansion, both the ongoing and delayed North MoPac part and the proposed South MoPac part, which is sparking all the arguing. He will also address the Uber/Lyft controversy and discuss the May 7 election, along with other big projects that are in planning, near construction or even under construction: toll lanes on South MoPac, U.S. 183 in East Austin and U.S. 183 in North Austin, I-35, Texas 71 near the airport.
He promises to hit on the $4.3 billion plan for I-35 renovation and expansion as well, and tell why he fears rail is more or less dead in the water for the foreseeable future.

Ben Wear has a wonderful sense of humor and was delighted to hear that Lion Robert Seidel (who’s returning for his first guest Tail Twisting appearance of 2016) will open our meeting using all new jokes and material specially tailored to the transportation industry.

Bring your questions for one of the Austin’s most knowledgeable transportation experts.
