Tying Learning to Service

May 25, 2017

Introduction by Lion Evan Wienck

Dr. Jana Minifie has been the Director for Service-Learning Excellence Program for Texas State University since September 2015. Service-learning is an innovative teaching technique that provides hands-on learning of course learning objectives to benefit a community partner. There are two critical components of service-learning courses: 1) the hands-on experience has to meet a need of the community partner, not a perceived need by the instructor, 2) the course must incorporate a reflective piece for deeper understanding of course learning objectives. Since taking over service-learning, the number of classes including a service-learning component has grown from 1-section fall 2015, to 43-sections spring 2017. Jana also serves as the Samuel Barshop Excellence Professorship in entrepreneurship. She works with Texas State entrepreneurs in developing their business plans
