Starting a Nonprofit – or Not

In 2017, Jean McArthur paid for six low-income Austin middle school students to attend UT Austin’s overnight band camp. This summer this endeavor sent 36 low-income students to band camp at UT San Antonio and Texas State. Ms. McArthur will talk about the evolution of this project; what she’s learned about nonprofits, fiscal sponsorships, and fund raising; and the logistics of sending students to summer camp. She’ll talk about both the pitfalls and the unexpected rewards of interacting with students, parents, teachers, and band camp directors. Much of what has been learned can be applied to similar projects.

About our Speaker:

Jean McArthur, a new member of the Austin Founder Lions Club, is a retired computer programmer who spent most of her career at UT Austin. Her interests have included whitewater kayaking and board games. She achieved an expert rating in Scrabble and played in tournaments in 15 countries during her twenty years as an active competitor. She swims year-long at Barton Springs and bikes frequently around Lady Bird Lake.
