"The State of Our State Parks"
by Todd McClanahan
Director of State Parks, Region 3
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

introduction by Lion Alan Ford

Many of us have grown up and grown old enjoying the outstanding state parks of Texas. We tend to take for granted these places of natural wonders, outdoor recreation and solitude—and the people who manage them in the face of drought, flood, fire, disease, insect and human pests and, not least, budget constraints. Their jobs often require the skills of naturalist, engineer, policeman, game warden, firefighter, campground host, and more.

Todd McClanahan

Todd McClanahan developed his special interest in parks and recreation as a part-time ranger in New Braunfels parks while working toward his degree in wildlife biology at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) University in San Marcos. After college graduation, he was promoted to park ranger superintendent where he worked before coming to Bastrop State Park in 2000. From park interpreter/police officer, Todd was promoted to assistant complex superintendent in 2004, and to park superintendent in 2007.

In 2012, Todd was promoted to regional director, and he now oversees a wide and diverse swath of state parks in Central Texas and the Hill Country, including Bastrop, Buescher, Canyon State Natural Area, Enchanted Rock, Guadalupe, Inks Lake, LBJ, Lost Maples, McKinney Falls, Pedernales Falls and South Llano River.

Todd will bring us the latest news about these unique public treasures, and an update on the road to recovery for Bastrop State Park, 96 percent of which was affected in 2011 by the worst wildfire in Texas history.
