Overview of current gene therapy clinical trials and strategies for inherited retinal diseases and clinical outcomes of the first FDA-approved ocular gene therapy for RPE65 associated retinal conditions, voretigene neparvovec-rzyl (Luxturna). 

About our Speaker:

Ninel Gregori, MD is a professor of clinical ophthalmology and vitreoretinal specialist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute as well as the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She completed her residency training and vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2007.  Dr. Gregori serves as a surgeon on pivotal clinical trials taking place at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute such as gene therapy for inherited retinal degenerations, retinal prostheses for severe atrophic age-related macular degeneration, Argus II implantation for profoundly blind patients with retinitis pigmentosa, and embryonic stem cell transplantation for patients with age-related macular degeneration and Stargardt disease.  

Dr. Gregori’s primary research interests are in the area of innovative surgical techniques and new therapies for patients with blinding retinal conditions without currently available treatments. She specializes in the management of cataract surgery complications, retinal detachment, macular surgery, retina laser surgery, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Dr. Gregori enjoys training ophthalmology residents and retina fellows in the clinic and operating room. She serves as a mentor to undergraduate students interested in medicine and medical students aspiring to pursue ophthalmology residency. She contributes annually to the AAO, ASRS, Retina Society annual meetings and services on the AAO Patient Education Committee and ASRS Education Committee.  She has been an oral examiner for the ABO since 2014. Her awards include the AAO Achievement Award in 2017, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) Senior Honor Award in 2017, The Michael R. Redmond, MD Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist Leadership Award from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology in 2013, and BPEI Professor of the Year in 2009. Through nomination by the Retina Society, she completed the AAO Leadership Development Program in 2018.
