How We Got the First ‘Picture’ of a Black Hole

 A group of 200 astronomers and data experts around the world worked together to produce the very first “photograph” of a black hole in the galaxy M87, and shared that image with the world in April. Dr. Noyola will discuss the work that went into capturing the black hole image. She also will explain the significance of that photograph, and what it teaches us about the nature of black holes. She also will briefly discuss the ongoing progress of the Giant Magellan Telescope being built in Chile, in which the University of Texas is a participant.

Dr. Eva Noyola studied physics at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City, and she earned her Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Texas – Austin. She worked as a post-doctoral Fellow doing research in a Max Planck Institute in Germany and in UNAM in Mexico before returning to Austin to work for the McDonald Observatory.
