"Rice, Rice... Everywhere... and not a grain to eat!"
by Milo Hamilton

introduction by Lion Bill Martin

Milo HamiltonSpeaker's Bio: Milo Hamilton is the senior economist for Firstgrain, a rice market advisory service here in Austin. He has lived here and ran his business here for the last 14 years. Firstgrain has clients across the rice marketing chain both in the US and elsewhere. He has been quoted by wire services across the globe.

For 18 years, Mr. Hamilton ran the rice procurement function for Uncle Ben’s in Houston, Texas as part of a Mars Incorporated team that was the largest buyer of rice for retail products in the world, human food, pet food and confectionery. He traded about 100 million USD of rice each year. His customers he advises include rice farmers, millers traders and brokers and international grain companies as well as exchanges, regulators and Agricultural Departments in the US and Asia.

His talk is a distillation of his thoughts garnered over 34 years in rice. About three years ago, he became concerned about rice farmers in Asia and the implications of their situation on migration in Asia and the use of resources, in particular water. It was a coincidence that he lives in Austin where rice and water are real issues. He does not have all the answers but his talk which keys off a book he just recently published will hopefully get you to think more about the issues in a global context.

Mr. Hamilton tells people, “Texas is bigger than France but the rice growing areas of the world are larger than Texas.” His motto is “Eat rice, potatoes make your butt big.”
