McCallum Fine Arts Academy
Lanier Bayliss
Introduction by Lion Tommy Cowan
McCallum
The Fine Arts Academy (FAA) at McCallum provides a program for students across Austin to pursue an accelerated arts curriculum as fine arts majors. McCallum Fine Arts Academy was embraced by UT College of Fine Arts (COFA) from its inception and a strong partnership with COFA continues today. Austin ISD supports the Academy with funding for additional staffing and technology to support the arts curricula.

Lanier BaylissSpeaker's Bio: Lanier Bayliss holds a Bachelor of Arts and the Fleming Award for Music from Hendrix College; a Master of Music Education from Louisiana State University, and Principal Certification from the State of Texas. She has conducted over 50 masterworks with chorus and orchestra; organized performing tours in the U.S. and abroad for high school, college, civic and church ensembles and served as Musical Theatre Director at Leysin American School in Switzerland.
After moving back to Austin, she founded and served as Artistic Director and Conductor of Austin Singers for ten years. A highlight of her teaching career was having all four of her choirs earn UIL Sweepstakes trophies during her last year at Spring Woods High School in Houston and, subsequently, being recruited by UT Austin. There she had a teaching fellowship, sang with Chamber Singers, and was conductor of Longhorn Singers.
Ms. Bayliss’ work at McCallum began the fall of 1998, with 4.5 fine arts faculty and 17 students officially enrolled in the Academy. Today, there are 18 fine arts faculty and staff working with approximately 500 Academy students. Under her leadership, the Academy has developed major recruitment activities and marketing materials; supported parents and faculty in beautification and bond projects to provide proper fine arts/campus facilities; and enlisted university and arts partners in efforts to expand curriculum and co-curricular learning to ensure college readiness.
