The Drug Policy Forum of Texas

Diana M. DiNitto

Introduction by Lion Mac Ragsdale

The DPFT members are citizens from a variety of political and social groups who are concerned about the effects of the war on drugs on our society. Their major goal is to promote the well informed open debate and discussion that is essential in making constructive policy changes.

Can Policy Prevent Substance Abuse?

This program will explore why the U.S. war on drugs has not been successful. It will also look at how social welfare policy discriminates against people with drug convictions and treats people with drug problems differently from those with other disabilities, and will suggest better approaches to assist people with drug problems and their families.

Speaker's Bio: Diana M. DiNitto is the Cullen Trust Centennial Professor in Alcohol Studies and Education and a Distinguished Teaching Professor at the UT at Austin School of Social Work. She is also an affiliate faculty member in Women’s and Gender Studies and the American Studies Department. She previously worked in the substance abuse treatment programs at Apalachee Community Mental Health Services in Tallahassee, Florida, and was a faculty member at the Florida State University School of Social Work. Her research and teaching interests are in social welfare policy, alcohol and drug problems, and violence against women.

Featured Lunch Menu: Meat and vegetable Dish (TBA), mixed green salad with assorted rolls and a featured daily dessert. Vegetarian meal or Grilled Chicken Caesar salad are available alternatives as well.
