Research to Decrease Nitrogen Pollution from Dairy Cattle

DATE: January 21, 2021  12:30 pm via Zoom

 Alexis Hruby
Introduced by Lion Mim Hruby

Nitrogen is the most common element on Earth, but nitrogen waste from animal agriculture can cause gas imbalances in nearby aquatic systems.

Fortunately, there are ways we can decrease nitrogen waste in animal agriculture, more specifically dairy cattle, through what we feed them.

In this talk, we’ll explore how amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are responsible for nitrogen waste and how we can make dairy cattle more efficient, mitigating their environmental impact.

About Our Speaker:

Alexis Hruby is currently a PhD student in dairy science at Virginia Tech. She is a Florida native and graduated from the nearby Auburn University with a degree in Animal Science in 2017. She is very passionate about agriculture, and moved to Blacksburg in hopes of furthering her studies to one day have a direct and positive impact on food production as an industry dairy nutritionist.
