In the 18th Century, Jews in Eastern Europe were persecuted and faced overwhelming obstacles. The Baal Shem Tov, a rabbi, mystic and healer from Poland, found ways to infuse his followers with hope. With the challenges facing the world today from COVID-19, the growing demands for racial equality and justice, and the political divide splitting the U.S. , many feel hopeless and powerless. Sandy Kress will share some Hasidic pearls of wisdom and apply their insights to the challenges we face today.
About our Speaker:
Sandy Kress, J.D., has had a distinguished career in the political arena where he was a leader in reforming public education. After serving as president of the Dallas School Board, Kress was appointed to state and national education reform groups. He became Senior Adviser on Education to President George W. Bush, spearheading the development of policy within the Administration and helping lead negotiations with the Congress over legislation that became the No Child Left Behind Act.
Upon his return to Texas, Kress was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to chair the Commission for a College Ready Texas and serve on his Competitiveness Council. In both roles, Kress pushed policies designed to help prepare more young Texans for post-secondary success, improving their prospects in life as well as strengthening the overall economy.
Kress is now turning most of his time, energy and spirit to the study and teaching of sacred texts and other religious topics. This engagement began with a major endeavor to teach the entire Torah cycle with an adult Bible study class at the Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin. Kress has expanded his teaching to other churches, synagogues, neighborhood group and University settings. He teaches weekly on a wide range of matters, involving the various books of the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, ancient wisdom sayings, and a variety of theological and ethical topics.
