White Cane Day

 Bill Daugherty, TSBVI Superintendent
Introduced by Lion Patti Robinson

Superintendent, Bill Daugherty will speak to us about TSBVI and White Cane Day.  He will share information about the school and our role in the education of students who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind and with multiple disabilities in the State of Texas. Mr. Daugherty will also discuss White Cane Day and TSBVI's role in hosting this event. The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.

About our speaker:
William (Bill) Daugherty has served as the Superintendent of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired since 2007, having previously been at the school as an assistant principal. Bill left TSBVI to become the Superintendent of the Kansas State School for the Blind from 1993 to 2007. While in Kansas Bill was a member of the Overland Park Host Lions Club, serving for one year as its President. Bill began his career in 1979 as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a large region surrounding Lubbock, Texas. He grew up in Austin right down Burnet Road from TSBVI and holds degrees from UT Austin and San Francisco State University.
