Annual Lions AISD Sportsmanship Award
May 11 2017

Come join us for a celebration and recognition of youth athletics at our annual Sportsmanship Award presentation. The stars of the day will be the youth athletes who will be recognized with a scholarship award for their excellence.

Gaylord Armstrong, a man who knows the ins and outs of sportsmanship very well, will present the awards. Armstrong grew up in East Texas and he and his family moved to Abilene when he was in the 9th grade. He attended Abilene High School playing high school baseball, football and basketball. His high school won the state championship his three years there in both baseball and football. He said "I was fortunate to be part of some great teams with superb coaches---for whom sportsmanship was a priority."

After high school, Armstrong weighed going pro, but decided to sign at Baylor University in Waco because of pitching coach Jelle Sorelle. He received a rare full scholarship for baseball as a pitcher. He went on to become student body president and learned great lessons of how students can impact sportsmanship through the Southwest Conference Committee, which he will speak about at Thursday’s meeting.

Armstrong graduated from Baylor in ’61 with a fellowship to George Washington University’s School of International Affairs in Washington D.C. He then went to the University of Texas Law School and graduated in 1968. He joined McGinnis, Lochridge & Kilgore L.L.P. and retired after 45 distinguished years with that law firm.

The Austin Founder Lions Club has been celebrating sportsmanship in our young athletes for more than 50 years. Come join us to see who this year’s winners are at this annual event along with the student athletes, coaches and other AISD officials.
