Get in the Swim of Things - Safely!

With Alissa Magrum from Colin's Hope

Introduction by

Lion Bonnie Glasgow

(WHO’LL SWIM FOR US!!)

Colin's Hope is a local water safety and drowning prevention organization that was formed in 2008 after local 4-year-old, Colin Holst drowned in a public, lifeguarded pool in South Austin.

When Colin's parents, Jeff and Jana Holst, learned that drowning is the No. 1 cause of accidental death for children under 5 and a leading cause for ages 1-14 — yet is preventable — they vowed to do something so that other families would not have to lose a child to drowning.

Since its formation in 2008, Colin's Hope has become a small but mighty power in water safety and drowning prevention — locally, statewide and nationally.

Alissa Magrum is the Executive Director of Colin’s Hope.  She began as a volunteer the year the organization was founded and transitioned to the role of Executive Director in December 2010. She is a mom to 3 pre-teen daughters, who all love to swim. Her own love of the water and her passion for keeping her kids (and all children) safe, has led Alissa to her dream job with Colin’s Hope.

The mission of Colin’s Hope and the message that drowning is preventable is one she believes in deeply. Alissa’s background is in nonprofit and volunteer management. She holds a master’s degree from St. Edward’s University in Organizational Leadership and Ethics and is a Certified Volunteer Administrator. Alissa is a leader in water safety and childhood injury prevention in her roles as the Vice-President of the Safe Kids Austin Board and Co-Chair of the Central Texas Water Safety Coalition. She is also an active Member of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and Central Texas Aquatic Association and a Founding Member of Families United to Prevent Drowning.

Colin's Hope has developed multiple drowning prevention programs and tools that are proven to be effective, innovative and cost efficient and replicable. This presentation will share Colin's story and educate us on simple things we can all do to prevent drowning.

During Alissa’s talk, new club member Bonnie Glasgow will conduct a fundraising challenge benefitting Colin’s Hope by swimming 100 consecutive lengths of the Lions Club 25-yard pool — stopping only at each wall for 10 seconds. She allows that this is a super human feat at her tender age of nearly 58 (and we agree.)

Bonnie is a 21-time Collegiate All American and the US Team Captain/Flag Bearer at the Mexico City World University Games in 1979 (where she won 4 Silver medals). She was an Olympic Trial finalist in ’76 and ’80 and co-captain of 1980’s US alternate Olympic Team for Maui, Hawaii. She last attempted this feat in April of 2010 and was successful, but just got back in the pool this month for the first time in 2 years, so she needs our encouragement. And your pledges!

She is soliciting sponsors … shout out of early thanks to Moton Crockett! The proceeds will be divided equally between Colin’s Hope and Grace Fellowship International.
