Advanced Cancer Treatment

August 6, 2015

Dr. Matthew McCurdy, MD, PhD, DABR
Introduced by Lion Robert Watson

CyberKnife® is an advanced technology that delivers a specialized form of radiation therapy called stereotactic radiosurgery, or stereotactic body radiation therapy. It is comprised of a compact linear accelerator, a machine that generates a radiation beam, attached to a highly maneuverable robotic arm.

The CyberKnife features a device that controls the width of the radiation beams the machine delivers during treatment, allowing our clinical experts to vary the beam size and treat a larger variety of tumors throughout the body.

During CyberKnife procedures, patients will lie on a treatment table while the machine’s robotic arm moves around their body delivering high doses of radiation directly to their tumor with pinpoint precision. The cumulative dose of radiation delivered by the CyberKnife kills tumor cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

Most treatment sessions typically last 30 – 90 minutes depending on the size, shape and location of your tumor.

Dr. Matthew McCurdy is a board certified radiation oncologist, and treats all types of cancer. Dr. McCurdy chose radiation oncology because “there are few things more gratifying for a physician than healing a patient with cancer.”

Dr. McCurdy graduated with a BS in Engineering, which led to a job as project manager for NASA, including John Glenn’s second space journey. He completed his medical school and residency training at Baylor College of Medicine where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. McCurdy also received a PhD in Bioengineering through the MD/PhD program funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. McCurdy has published extensively on novel radiation oncology treatments and has presented talks at many national meetings. He received the Young Oncologist Award and Roentgen Research Award. He was also named a Top Doctor in 2013 by the International Association of Radiologists.

In his spare time, Dr. McCurdy enjoys spending time with his two young children and his wife, Dr. Heather Anderson. He is also a long-time endurance competition enthusiast. He qualified for the Iron Man World Championship and was honored to place in the top 100 in the 2014 Boston Marathon. He also enjoys playing the trumpet, piano, guitar and singing.
