Symbolism in Painting
introduced by Lion Patti Robinson

Nancy Hughes is a docent at the Blanton Museum and will talk about the symbolism in painting. Why is the puppy in the painting of the Virgin Mary?  Why do so many Dutch paintings have food and flowers?  The European Collection at the Blanton Museum of Art, ranging from medieval times until the 19th century, is rich with signs and symbols that viewers of the time would have been quite familiar.  Let's review some of these symbols and learn to interpret some paintings.
